Portal Hypertension in Children Due to Portal Vein Thrombosis

Abstract

|
Twelve cases of portal hypertension in children caused by portal vein thrombosis is presented. Eight of them showed portal vein thrombosis by splenoportography. Portal vein thrombosis as an underlying pathology were proved in remaining four cases during surgery. There was only one death, in which temporary measure was done during surgery. Varying shunt procedures including three centrally placed spleno-renal shunt, 3 conventional spleno-renal, one side-to side spleno-renal, four mesocaval shunt were used. Magnitute of decompression of portal pressure after shunt procedure were 100-350 mm saline, thus averaging 160 mm saline. No major bleeding occurred during follow up period varying 1 year to 15 years.
